N°87 Statement Earrings

Woolgoolga’s Rockpool Algae, Reimagined in Gold & Apatite

I like to think that I design with purpose, and these earrings are no exception.
These earrings are a direct structural and colour translation of the algae on the right, photographed in a shallow rockpool in Woolgoolga (Whoopi). This species of blue-green algae thrives in intertidal zones, forming delicate, fan-like structures that ripple with water movement. The rich blue and green hues, paired with the fluid, draping growth, inspired my choice of Apatite, Chrysoprase, and cascading gold chains to create an elegant but biologically accurate interpretation of this marine organism.

This particular algae has broad, lobed fronds with irregular edges and color gradients that shift between deep ocean blue and vibrant green, depending on the light and water depth. The layered, flowing appearance of the algae dictated both the stone choices and the tassel design.

• Apatite (Deep Blue Faceted Gemstone Focal Point) – The rich, dark blue of the Apatite stones closely resembles the deeper tones within the algae’s structure. I specifically chose faceted Apatite to mimic the way light reflects off wet algae surfaces, creating a dynamic, shifting color effect.
• Chrysoprase (Stacked Beaded Accents) – These algae are not an uniform colour—they transition from deep teal to bright, almost neon green at its edges. Chrysoprase captures these vibrant green highlights perfectly, adding the same sense of depth and contrast seen in the natural organism.
• Gold Tassels (Mimicking Algae’s Flowing Structure) – The most defining feature of this algae is the way its fronds move with the water, forming delicate, undulating layers. The gold chains in these earrings replicate this motion, giving them a fluid, organic feel that reflects the way algae drapes and shifts in the current. The tassel structure also nods to the algae’s frond-like, interconnected growth pattern, where strands intertwine and cascade over one another.
