N°84 Statement Earrings

Nature’s Geometry: Earrings Inspired by Woolgoolga’s Rockpool Algae

I am still drive by the precision of a scientist and enjoy the creativity of a jewellery maker, and these earrings reflect both. They are a direct interpretation of the algae on the right, found in a shallow rockpool in Woolgoolga (Whoopi). 

What immediately stood out to me in this algae was the organic symmetry of its growth. Its fronds extend in rounded, interlocking patterns, creating an almost floral effect. I wanted to capture this repeating structure, which is why I used ornate, openwork silver elements that mirror the way the algae’s edges curve and overlap.

The colour transition from deep blue to vibrant green was also something I knew had to be incorporated. I chose Apatite for the darker blue hues found in the algae’s deeper sections, and raw Emerald to represent the bright green highlights at the frond tips where light penetrates.

• Apatite (Deep Blue Focal Stones) – The algae’s base tones range from deep marine blue to teal, reflecting water depth and light absorption. The faceted Apatite stones capture this effect perfectly, giving the earrings a rich oceanic blue that interacts with light, just like the algae does underwater.
• Raw Emerald (Green Droplet Accents) – The bright green tips of the algae’s fronds are recreated with raw, unpolished Emeralds. Their organic texture mirrors the natural, slightly rough surface of the algae, while their green hue directly matches the color seen in sunlit sections of the organism.
• Ornate Silver Framework (Mimicking Algae Growth Patterns) – The algae don't grow in random shapes; they follows a repeating, organic geometry. The delicate silver filigree used in these earrings mimics the interwoven, fluid growth of the algae’s fronds, adding both structure and an organic aesthetic.
