Bold, Fierce, and Unapologetically Stunning – Inspired by a Juvenile Fire fish

Some creatures demand attention without even trying, and the juvenile firefish I photographed in Lennox Head is one of them. Despite its delicate, feathery fins, this little predator is confident, eye-catching, and absolutely untouchable

This design is a direct translation of the fire fish’s dramatic colours, textures, and striking patterns. Its fan-like pectoral fins have a mesmerising mix of burgundy, peach, and white, and its striped body and bold eye spots make it instantly recognizable. I wanted these earrings to capture the same sense of bold contrast, movement, and natural elegance.

The deep red raw garnet stones at the top of the earrings mimic the fire fish’s burgundy body, which contrasts beautifully against the lighter background of the reef. The raw, unpolished finish keeps them untamed and natural—just like the firefish itself.

The agate geode slices reflect the translucent quality of the fire fish’s fins. The natural banding in the agate mirrors the layered striations of the fish’s fan-like pectoral fins, and the crystalline center gives it a glowing, otherworldly effect—just like light passing through delicate fins underwater.

The intricate gold connector between the stones represents the interwoven structure of the firefish’s spines—delicate yet strong, flexible yet precise.
