When Black Needed an Answer

This set began with an encounter on North Lord Howe Island, where a crinoid had fully unfurled into that impossible tangerine-yellow, suspended against a blue so saturated it felt almost constructed rather than natural, and it was that collision—heat against depth—that held and drove everything that followed.

The piece built out from that contrast through two necklaces that could be worn independently, layered, or connected into one long, uninterrupted line, both fitted with extender chains so the length could be adjusted depending on how the colour needed to sit. The outer necklace carried the weight, anchored by a faceted Brazilian tangerine agate that pulled the eye downward into a suspended Jaipur agate geode slice, its internal blues echoing that reef depth, while blister pearls from Shanghai, Mexican crazy lace agate, and hematite chevrons created a rhythm that felt structured rather than decorative. The inner necklace tightened the composition through Peruvian amazonite, Indian apatite, and fine hessonite garnet, holding the colour in a more controlled, precise register.

The three earring directions extended that same palette, moving from oceanic agate geode slices (5.7cm long), to more saturated yellow-tangerine mother-of-pearl frames with stacked amazonite, apatite, and hessonite (6cm long), through to minimal agate stacks on elongated French wires that gave a longer, cleaner line.

Held together with warm 22-carat gold-plated elements, it became the piece reached for when colour needed to push back.
