A Stunning Christmas Gift 350 million years in the Making

Some gifts arrive overnight; this one took 350 million years—long before forests, long before dinosaurs, long before humans dreamt of jewellery. Orthoceras fossils, ancient relatives of today’s cuttlefish, form the spine of this four-piece set. Their long, mineralised chambers feel less like stones and more like artifacts that belong onto the Museum of Modern Art—geometric relics shaped by Paleozoic oceans.

A centrepiece this commanding asks for restraint, so I kept the palette monochrome: black-on-black onyx, lava, tourmaline, and agates, anchored by cool silver. But the real labour of love lies in the beads that shimmer quietly: I hand-silver-gilded each lava bead, a painstaking process. Lava is porous, unpredictable, and stubborn; the silver leaf must be coaxed onto its surface fragment by fragment. It’s the same delicate technique Klimt used—except executed on volcanic stone, turning matte black into tiny cosmic globes with imagined continents.

Two necklaces shift between lives—stacked, solo, or linked for mid or long lengths. The earrings echo the theme: feather-light silver-gilded lava discs (5.2 cm) and minimalist triangular onyx pairs (5.8cm long).
