N°106 Statement Earrings - The Vanuatu Collection

When I first came across this coral in a shallow lagoon during a night snorkel, I was mesmerised by its radial patterns—turquoise polyps radiating from dark centres, each outlined with an almost mathematical precision. That living geometry became the muse for these earrings.

The triangular drops (which sit at an angle) are cut from genuine turquoise, an increasingly rare stone in today’s market. This particular turquoise comes from Hebei province in China, a region known for producing material of remarkable colour and depth. Its vivid turquoise tones, veined through a dark brown matrix, echo the exact contrast seen in the coral’s skeletal ridges and soft tissue. Above each triangular drop, I added a faceted turquoise cube, a playful nod to the coral’s repeating structural units.

Suspended from hammered gold-plated bars, the light-weight earrings carry both strength and delicacy, much like the reef itself. For me, this design is not only a celebration of rare turquoise but also a way of translating the reef’s quiet resilience into wearable form—an artefact of living ecology turned into enduring art.
