Bumblebee Jasper — Sri Lanka at Full Volume

This pair was inspired by the more exuberant end of the same Sri Lankan spectrum: deep yellow, saffron, burnt orange, ochre, gold and black, colours that repeatedly stopped me in my tracks in Buddha statues, temple decoration, flower offerings and the incredible Sri Lankan sunsets throughout the island.

Bumblebee Jasper from Indonesia captures that intensity almost outrageously well. Its volcanic bands and pools of yellow, orange, cream, grey and black look painted rather than geological, with each stone creating its own completely unpredictable composition.

In these earrings, I tried to translate the saturated saffrons, yellows and burnt oranges of Sri Lanka through the extraordinary natural colour of Bumblebee Jasper, complemented by tiny quartz crystals set into a silver-plated base from Jaipur & Seoul (6.0cm long).

What fascinates me about these intense yellows, saffrons and burnt oranges is their psychological lift. They feel warm, energetic and optimistic, particularly in the middle of an Australian winter. In these earrings, I wanted to bring home a little of Sri Lanka’s fearless colour—and the sheer pleasure of wearing it.
