A Little Piece of Ocean in Stone

Some of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful blues are not the loud tropical ones, but the softer shades that appear when the light changes: pale aqua, milky turquoise and those almost impossible blue-greens that seem to hover somewhere between sky and sea. They immediately made me think of Larimar, one of the most extraordinary and most beautiful stones I know.

Found only in the Dominican Republic, Larimar looks almost as though the ocean has somehow been turned back into stone. Its cloudy blues, soft whites and wandering mineral patterns have movement within them, and no two pieces ever quite repeat themselves.

For these earrings, I paired those extraordinary Larimar triangles with tiny quartz crystals and silver lotus flowers, bringing another part of Sri Lanka into the design.Set into a silver-plated base from Jaipur and Seoul, these earrings are 5.6cm cm shorties!  In this profoundly Buddhist country, the lotus is everywhere, carrying its ancient symbolism of purity, awakening and the possibility of rising beautifully from difficult beginnings.

A little Sri Lankan serenity, translated through a stone that was born on the other side of the world.
