N°052 Statement Earrings - The Vanuatu Collection

The ultrastructure of abalone shell, or paua, is a marvel of biology—microscopic layers of calcium carbonate arranged in a brick-and-mortar formation that scatter light into iridescence.
This phenomenon, known as structural colouration, is not merely beautiful but functional, providing strength and resilience to the shell. I drew on this interplay of physics and biology to shape these earrings.

The eye-like paua pieces capture the shifting greens, purples, and blues of nacre, while baroque pearls echo the organic irregularities of growth and life beneath the surface. Set into a silver-plated base, the design celebrates both symmetry and asymmetry.
For me, these earrings hold the same quiet brilliance as paua itself—a reminder of how complexity gives rise to radiance.
