When White Becomes the Loudest Colour

Sri Lanka may throw colour around with glorious abandon, but one of our most overwhelming experiences was almost entirely white.

We happened to be there for Poson Poya, the great Buddhist festival commemorating the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka more than two thousand years ago.
We saw barely another Westerner among the reported 600,000 people, and dressed in white ourselves, something that was met with enormous warmth. 
The women, in particular, were wonderfully curious about the pearls I wore throughout those three days, touching, examining and discussing my earrings and necklaces with infectious enthusiasm.

Against brilliant stupas, moonlit pilgrimage grounds and thousands upon thousands dressed in white, I stopped seeing white as the absence of colour; here it felt luminous, ceremonial and intensely alive.

Naturally, that Sri Lankan white came home with me in - and in these earrings this is expressed through beautiful Sri Lankan moonstone and tiny pearls set into a 22k gold and silver-plated base from Jaipur and Seoul (6.9cm long).
