Toxic Love Affair

There are creatures on a reef that practically beg to become jewellery, like these Palythoan polyps I found while snorkelling — beautiful, colonial little cnidarians that look like a gathering of velvet buttons and come with an extraordinarily sinister chemical secret. They contain palytoxin, one of the most potent naturally occurring toxins known.

There is something irresistible about an animal that looks this soft, luminous while carrying quite that level of biochemical menace.

I knew I wanted to translate those clusters of little polyps, but the answer only appeared when I rediscovered these extraordinary golden pieces in my studio. Suddenly there they were: a whole Palythoa colony, each tiny cup pushing out beside the next. I paired them with deliberately raw blue-green apatite, keeping its fractured, watery edges intact rather than taming it into something too polished ( 7.5cm long).
(These stones were photographed in full sunlight to reveal their remarkable raw nature;  indoors the Apatite appears considerably darker and moodier.)

Set into a 22k gold-plated base, with elements collected from Jaipur and Seoul, the result feels part reef, part treasure, part beautifully dressed chemical weapon.

A toxic little love story from the sea — because apparently even poison can have excellent taste.
