The Secret Heart of a Barnacle

Some of Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary colour was hiding where I least expected it. Snorkelling off Trincomalee, I looked into an otherwise rather unremarkable barnacle and found this: an impossibly vivid turquoise heart, formed by its feeding appendages curled inside. It was so delicate, so perfectly coloured and so completely at odds with what you expect a barnacle to contain that I became rather obsessed with it.

These earrings are my attempt to translate that tiny underwater revelation into jewellery. The ethereal aquamarine hues of an agate geode thundereggecho the mineral textures of the reef, while faceted Indian chalcedony and little blue quartz crystals pick up that startling flash of turquoise hidden inside. The stones are set into silver-plated base from Jaipur and Seoul, bringing a little more light to the whole composition.

And despite all that geological drama, they are delightful little shorties at only 5.8 cm long!

I love the idea that something so commonplace can conceal something so mesmerising. Perhaps these earrings are a small reminder to look twice—the extraordinary is very often hiding inside the ordinary.
