When the Sun Turned Everything to Wine and Gold

Near Trincomalee one evening, the Sri Lankan sky seemed to abandon every sensible idea of what a sunset should look like. The light deepened from honey and amber into mauve, aubergine, burgundy and almost-black purple, while an old fishing boat moved across the water in silhouette. It was one of those fleeting combinations of colour and light that lasts minutes but somehow fixes itself permanently in your memory.

When I looked at these extraordinary pieces of Australian Mookaite from the Pilbara, I saw that evening immediately. The stone carries those same great pools of wine, ochre, plum and glowing yellow, divided by wonderful natural lines as though the sunset had fractured and been preserved inside it.

In these earrings, I tried to translate that Trincomalee evening through Mookaite, adding honey-hued quartz crystals and 22k gold-plated settings to catch the last warmth of the sinking sun (6.8cm long).

Perhaps that is what I love most about them: two ancient Australian stones carrying the memory of a Sri Lankan sky that existed for only a few extraordinary minutes.
