Reef-Fined Elegance: A Statement from the Depths

When I first encountered this Scolymia coral while diving at Lord Howe Island, it was like finding a hidden treasure on the reef. Unlike sprawling coral colonies, Scolymia corals are solitary, making them rare and striking in their individuality. This particular one caught my eye instantly—its sculptural ridges, fluid lines, and extraordinary interplay of colour seemed almost unreal. The way its deep emerald greens, electric blues, and earthy browns blended together in seamless gradients reminded me that nature remains the most accomplished designer. I knew right then that this coral would be the blueprint for something equally unique—a pair of earrings that would capture its essence in both form and material.

These handcrafted earrings feature Chrysocolla and Labradorite intarsia stones, meticulously cut and polished to reflect the intricate patterns and shifting hues of the Scolymia. The Chrysocolla carries that same vibrant green-blue saturation, mimicking the radiating folds of the coral, while the Labradorite captures the iridescence that appears when light grazes its surface, much like the way water refracts over the coral’s tissue and yes both earrings have iridescent Labradorite, but I couldn't get them in one image; so please see other images!).
The layered intarsia stones, which come from an Indian stone artisan is intentional—it echoes the structural complexity of the coral’s ridges, where light and shadow interplay to create a hypnotic effect.

I didn’t stop at just mirroring the colour and pattern. The textural details of this coral demanded to be acknowledged, which is why I integrated tiny Agate and Chalcedony beads. These beads reflect the subtle, undulating details of the Scolymia’s surface—each bead chosen for its translucency and tonal variation to replicate the organic depth of the coral’s flesh. The silver spiral elements are a nod to the natural symmetry of this species, reinforcing the radial balance found in both the coral and the final jewellery design.
