N°94 Statement Earrings

While diving, I’m always drawn to the hidden textures and shifting iridescence of coral polyps, those tiny architects of the reef. The image on the right captures an incredible coral colony where swirling blues and greens meet intricate, layered formations, revealing a microcosm of complexity and movement. The way the coral’s surface glows under light and the way its structure builds upon itself over time became the blueprint for these Schalenblende, Chalcedony, and Aquamarine earrings, set in a silver-plated base.

The faceted Chalcedony stones at the center of the earrings reflect the dreamy, glowing blues of the coral’s surface, capturing the way light bounces off the living tissue. Their soft, watery translucence mirrors the luminescent glow of the polyps, almost as if they hold the ocean’s light within them. Just above, a delicate Aquamarine teardrop mimics the crystal-clear depths of the reef, bringing in a touch of soft ocean clarity.The Schalenblende stones at the base are where the real coral inspiration shines through. Their layered, wave-like banding is a direct translation of the coral’s ridged skeletal structure, where polyps form and grow, building the reef over time.

The natural stripes of golden brown, deep black, and soft beige in the Schalenblende reflect the mineral-encrusted sections of coral, where old growth meets new, and the reef’s foundation takes shape. 

 Schalenblende was first discovered back in 1892 by J.D. Dana. He chose to name it after the German words “Schale” and “Blende”, which means “to cover” or “to hide”. This refers to the number of different minerals within Schalenblende that are hidden throughout it’s concentric layers.

The interplay between smooth, glowing blues and earthy, structured browns makes these earrings a true reflection of coral’s duality—soft and fluid, yet strong and enduring.
