For decades I’ve photographed those looping, paired scars in corals, not out of mystery but recognition. As a reef ecologist, I knew exactly what I was looking at: a monogamous pair of snapping shrimps living just beneath the coral’s skin, running parallel lives with enviable boundaries. Separate tunnels. Shared bedroom. Absolute clarity.

They carve individual corridors through the coral skeleton for ventilation and feeding, but meet in a single central chamber to mate, molt, and negotiate the long game. Monogamous, committed, but never codependent. Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter energy. Frida and Diego with walls intact. The coral grows over them, records their domestic arrangement as pale, deliberate geometry — scars that look less like damage and more like architectural plans.
