Nilaveli After Dark

Nilaveli gave me two completely different colour worlds within the space of a few hours. By day, the sea was that outrageous tropical turquoise that barely looks real. By night, I sat beneath the palms in a pool of golden light, sketchbook on the table, while the sky deepened into blue-black and everything around me shifted into amber, rust and shadow.

These wonderfully eccentric verdigris mythical creatures from Athens seemed made for that collision of colours. Their blue-green copper patina carries the memory of the sea, while shiraz, eggplant and rose-coloured quartz crystals pick up the warm evening glow and those little flashes of pink and copper as the light disappeared (6.4cm long).

I set the whole odd assembly into a 22k gold-plated base, because subtlety had clearly left the beach by then.

A turquoise Sri Lankan sea, a Greek mythical creature, burnt orange quartz and a sketchbook under a palm tree. Somehow, they all agreed to become earrings.
