Gold in the Dambulla Shadows

The cave temples at Dambulla were one of those places in Sri Lanka where I found myself looking as much at the colours as at the extraordinary Buddhas themselves. Against the darkness of the caves, centuries of muted gold, ochre, cream, charcoal and warm brown seem to emerge from the shadows, illuminated here and there by shafts of tropical light. Nothing is garish; everything has the depth and patina of enormous age.

That palette came back to me when I saw these pieces of fossilised Indian palmwood. Their tiny markings, creamy stone and dramatic pools of almost-black brown have something ancient and organic about them, so I complemented them with small citrine crystals in silver-plated settings, bringing in the luminous gold of the Dambulla Buddhas.

In these earrings, I tried to translate the extraordinary warmth of those ancient cave interiors into something that could leave the temple and be worn.

I particularly love these tones against black, white, linen, tobacco, chocolate or a beautiful old denim; they don't need colour coordination so much as interesting company.
