N°71 Statement Earrings

From Rockpool to Jewellery Box...for those who love tiny earrings

Every dive and every tidepool exploration provides a new blueprint for my work and this chance meeting with vibrant algae found in a shallow rockpool in Woolgoolga (or "Whoopi" as locals call it), is one of my favourites. 

These algae thrive in tidepools, where they almost fluoresce in shades of turquoise, emerald, and deep blue under the sunlight. Its textures, colors, and biological form directly influenced my material and design choices. 

The algae's undulating, petal-like fronds appear almost translucent, their hues shifting depending on light and water clarity. The gradation of blues, greens, and golds in the earrings mirrors this. The layered structure of the algae—some areas more opaque, others allowing light to pass through—reminded me of the way faceted gemstones interact with light. I knew I wanted to replicate both the vibrancy and the organic fluidity of this life form in jewelry.
And do I  selected  each element in these earrings to match both the color spectrum and the way the algae visually behaves underwater:

• Apatite (Faceted Blue-Green Gemstones) – The algae’s base tones range from deep teal to vibrant marine blue, depending on water clarity. The Apatite stones reflect this dynamic color shift, especially as light catches their faceted surfaces.
• Raw Peridot (Green Droplet Accents) – The bright green peridot stones at the base of each earring represent the outermost edges of the algae’s fronds, which appear almost translucent where sunlight penetrates them. I used raw, uncut Peridot to maintain an organic, natural texture, just like the algae’s uneven, growing edges.
• Gold Curved Elements (Mimicking Growth Patterns) – The soft, flowing curves of the algae’s structure are mirrored in the delicate gold framework, which adds movement to the design. These open forms allow for negative space, just as the algae’s fronds naturally create gaps and overlaps.
