How the Sea Urchin’s Anus (Yes, Really) Inspired My Design

When I say my jewellery is inspired by marine biology, I really mean it. 
These earrings are my interpretation of the turquoise lines & striped spines surrounding the incredibly beautiful anus of a sea urchin. Yes, you read that right. While most people don’t give much thought to sea urchin anatomy, I couldn’t ignore the perfect symmetry, striking banding, and mesmerizing details of this often-overlooked feature.

Why let the rest of the urchin get all the attention when its anus is a masterpiece of natural design? The alternating stripes on the spines encircling it inspired my use of raw Botswana Agate, a stone naturally formed with soft, wavy bands. The golden glow of Citrine represents the subtle warm hues seen in the surrounding patterns—because if you’re going to take inspiration from an urchin’s rear end, it might as well be as dazzling as nature intended.

• Raw Botswana Agate (Striped, Earthy Banding) – The striped spines surrounding the urchin’s anus are perfectly mimicked by Botswana Agate, which naturally forms in layered waves of soft grays, creams, and browns. The smooth yet irregular markings create a subtle, natural contrast—just like the urchin’s own intricate defense system.

• Raw Citrine (Golden Accents) – The soft golden glow of Citrine represents the warm undertones found in the urchin’s spines and surrounding body tissue. This stone adds depth, warmth, and a touch of radiance, ensuring these earrings feel both structured and organic.
• Hammered Gold Discs (Capturing the Spiny Texture) – A sea urchin’s spines aren’t just there for show—they’re sharp, textured, and protective. The hammered gold discs reflect this rugged surface, balancing out the smooth stones with a raw, handcrafted finish.
