Colonial ascidians, or sea squirts, may not get the same attention as corals, but their intricate maze-like patterns and modular growth structures are just as fascinating. The species in the image is a colonial tunicate, forming a network of interconnected zooids that create a striking surface texture. The contrasting dark channels and lighter, textured polyps immediately reminded me of the interplay between Labradorite’s shifting iridescence and the matte gold pendant in these earrings.

    • Colonial ascidians are not individual animals but a collective of tiny, genetically identical zooids arranged in complex formations.
    • The three stacked Labradorite stones reflect this modularity, with each gemstone acting like a distinct zooid, forming part of a larger structure.
    • The ascidian’s network of channels and raised structures inspired the use of faceted Labradorite, a stone known for its dynamic, shifting hues.
    • Like the ascidian’s dark siphon openings, Labradorite’s deep gray-green base color is punctuated by flashes of gold, blue, and green, mimicking the light play across the colonial surface.
    • The matte gold tag pendant at the base of the earrings is a deliberate contrast to the fluid, organic structure of the tunicate.
    • Just as the ascidian’s structure has a tough, protective outer tunic, this metal element adds a sense of solidity to the design, grounding the more shifting, fluid nature of the gemstones.
  • 22k gold-plated and oxidised silver-plated base from Istanbul, Seoul and Jaipur;  7.8cm long
  • Like all our pieces these one-of-a-kind earrings are handcrafted with love and care in my little studio in Lennox Head!
  • The Statement Earrings will be beautifully gift-wrapped and ready as an exceptional gift for yourself or an unexpected gift for someone special.

Colonial ascidians challenge the idea of individual vs. collective life, forming intricate, functional communities on the reef. This earring design reflects that concept—each Labradorite stone stands alone yet is part of a greater whole, just like the ascidian’s modular structure. This piece is perfect for those who appreciate nature’s hidden geometries and the quiet beauty of the reef’s lesser-known species.
