Prehnite & Lapis Earrings Inspired by Mushroom-Like Ascidians

Some of the most bizarre and otherworldly creatures in the ocean are the ones that barely look like animals at all. On a night snorkel off Komodo Island, my dive torch illuminated what appeared to be a tiny enchanted forest growing on the reef—a cluster of stalked ascidians that looked exactly like glowing, bioluminescent mushrooms. 
These alien-like tunicates, often mistaken for sponges or even corals, are actually filter-feeding invertebrates, pulsating gently as they strain tiny food particles from the water. Their delicate, translucent bodies and softly glowing tops looked like something out of a deep-sea fairytale, and I knew they deserved to be transformed into jewelry.

These earrings bring that underwater magic to life:

• Prehnite (Echoing the Translucent Glow of the Ascidians) – With its soft green inclusions, Prehnite looks like light captured in stone, much like the way the ascidians seemed to glow against the dark reef.

• Lapis Lazuli (Representing the Night Ocean's Depths) – The deep, velvety blues of Lapis are like the Komodo waters under moonlight, making the ascidians’ glowing forms even more striking.
• Silver Mushroom Charm (My artistic license) – Because these tiny ascidians looked so much like an enchanted underwater mushroom garden, the silver charm makes sure you never forget their whimsical nature.
