Siphon Style—Earrings Inspired by the Luminous Tissue of a Giant Clam

While snorkeling in New Caledonia, I was drawn to the hypnotic textures and iridescent hues of a giant clam’s inhalant siphon. The clam’s siphon isn’t just a functional structure—it’s a dynamic, light-catching masterpiece, with rippling folds, fiery ambers, deep metallics, and an almost liquid shimmer. That incredible visual inspired these handcrafted Montana Agate, Pyrite, and Carnelian earrings, set in a 22k gold-plated base.

The elongated Montana Agate stones reflect the dramatic striping of the siphon’s tissue, with their rich, warm layers of honey, burnt orange, and deep espresso brown mirroring the way light moves across the clam’s surface. Just like the siphon’s wave-like folds, the stones have natural, fluid banding that adds depth and an organic, flowing quality. The faceted Pyrite stones, placed above the agate, replicate the metallic, shimmering patches that form where the clam’s tissue meets its shell, mimicking the way iridescence plays across its surface when viewed at different angles. A tiny Carnelian bead at the very top brings in a final fiery pop, a nod to the siphon’s glowing, ember-like highlights that seem to flicker beneath the water’s surface.

The interlocking golden circles surrounding the agate stones reflect the undulating opening of the siphon, where water flows in and out in a continuous, life-sustaining rhythm. Their subtle movement when worn adds to the sense of fluidity, echoing the way the siphon flexes and shifts as the clam filters the ocean around it.
