N°30 Statement Earrings

From Rockpool to Jewelry Box

Every piece I create is rooted in marine biology, not just in color but in structure, form, and the way these organisms function in their natural habitat. These earrings on the left are a direct design interpretation of the algae on the right, which I photographed in a shallow rockpool in Woolgoolga (Whoopi). This algae species grows in overlapping, irregular fronds with a bioluminescent-like glow in blues and greens. Its intricate, undulating shape and the way its branches intersect in natural X-like formations inspired both the materials and the construction of these earrings.

These algae thrive in tidepools, where they almost fluoresce in shades of turquoise, emerald, and deep blue under the sunlight. Its textures, colors, and biological form directly influenced my material and design choices. 

I have carefully selected  each stone in these earrings to match both the color spectrum and the way the algae visually behaves underwater:

• Biwa Cross Pearls (Structural Focal Point) – The algae’s crisscrossing growth pattern was too distinctive to ignore, so I chose elongated biwa pearls in an "X" formation to represent this. Their natural iridescence captures the algae’s green-to-gold color shift, making them the perfect material for this effect.
• Iolite & Aquamarine (Gradient Beading) – These gemstones were chosen specifically for their varying transparency, mimicking the way light penetrates the algae’s fronds in different water depths. Iolite has a deep, almost oceanic blue that reflects the darker zones, while aquamarine represents the water’s surface reflections.
• Agates (Deep Green Accents) – The darker green tones of the algae’s base are reflected in the agate beads, which provide contrast and depth, just as the algae’s structure varies in color intensity.
• set into a silver-plated base from Jaipur & Seoul (6.5 cm long)
