N°107 Statement Earrings

When I came across this Dendronephthya coral in Vanuatu, I was captivated by its almost alien beauty—a network of translucent polyps, glowing blues, fiery reds, and spiky forms that look as if they belong in another world. This coral’s dramatic contrast of color, texture, and movement became the foundation for these handcrafted Carnelian and Peruvian Chalcedony earrings, set in a silver-plated base.

The deep, fiery Carnelian gemstones at the top and bottom of the earrings reflect the coral’s vibrant, almost neon-red polyps, which stand out starkly against the translucent blue of its soft tissue. Just like how these polyps extend outwards to catch nutrients from passing currents, the faceted Carnelian catches and reflects light, giving the earrings a lively energy. The cool blue-green Peruvian Chalcedony teardrop mirrors the soft, almost ethereal tissue of the coral, with its milky translucence and subtle variations in tone adding to the organic, fluid feel of the piece.

The dangling shell-shaped charms at the bottom are a playful nod to the coral’s association with reef life, where tiny creatures, from brittle stars to mollusks, weave themselves into its branches for protection.
