Wear a Wish

At a Hindu temple in Trincomalee, I became fascinated by a turquoise gate slowly disappearing beneath hundreds of tiny cloth bundles. People had tied them there carrying offerings, hopes and wishes—little private negotiations with the universe in faded saffron, rust, gold and cream.

There was something wonderfully human about it. We all have something we are quietly hoping for, however sensible and self-sufficient we pretend to be.

In these earrings, I tried to translate that extraordinary wishing wall through glowing pieces of amber I brought back from Germany, delicate silver filigree, tiny quartz crystals and pale turquoise shell teardrops from India, assembled with silver-plated elements from Seoul and Jaipur. The result has that same unexpected marriage of saffron and turquoise—and perhaps just enough talisman about it to make wearing them feel rather special (8.5 cm long).
