There is something magnificently uncompromising about murex snails. Beneath all that extraordinary sculptural armour is a nocturnal predator, emerging after dark to hunt other molluscs. Beautiful, elaborate and considerably tougher than it looks—it is not a creature designed to disappear politely into the background.

I encountered a murex while snorkelling in Sri Lanka, and suddenly these remarkable silver-plated casts, which I had bought in Seoul 15 years ago and never quite found the moment to use, had found their reason.

I paired them with shifting Madagascan labradorite and tiny turquoise quartz crystals, catching the greens, greys and electric blues of the Sri Lankan coastline without making anything tacky “seaside” (8.2cm long).

In these earrings, I tried to translate the strange power of the murex into something wearable—sculptural, elegant, slightly formidable and completely unapologetic.
