N°103 Statement Earrings - The Sri Lanka Collection

Before the Lotus Opens

Some of the most seductive lotus flowers I saw in Sri Lanka were not open at all. At market stalls and outside temples they sat tightly furled, their petals holding those extraordinary muted purples, bruised mauves and smoky greens, as though someone had deliberately turned the saturation down.

I had Mystic Merlinite—Indigo Gabbro from Madagascar—waiting for exactly this sort of accident. Born from magma cooling slowly beneath the earth, its jumble of minerals creates an unpredictable landscape of purple-black, cream, moss and charcoal that seemed uncannily close to those unopened lotus buds.

In these earrings, I tried to translate that quieter, more mysterious moment of the lotus, pairing the Merlinite with tiny amethyst and quartz crystals, then setting everything into a silver-plated composition assembled from elements sourced in the US, Jaipur and Seoul, including those wonderful cascading silver petals from the US (7.5cm long).
(These stones were photographed in full sunlight to reveal their remarkable nature; indoors the Mystic Merlinite appears considerably darker and moodier.)
