The Last Light Refuses to Leave

One evening near Trincomalee, I watched the sunset do something extraordinary: the palms became almost black silhouettes, the sea slipped into silvery blue, and behind them the sky burned with this intense, almost metallic gold. It was one of those combinations of colour that lodges itself firmly in my jewellery brain.

The snowflake obsidian from Oregon, set in silver plate, gave me those wonderful fractured blacks, greys and silvers. I paired it with tiny pale-blue quartz crystals and gloriously unruly 22-carat gold-plated suns from Istanbul to capture that great burst of gold behind the palms (7.8cm long).

In these earrings, I tried to translate my experience of that particular Trincomalee sunset—the darkness of the palms, the cooling silver-blue sea and that completely unapologetic final blast of gold.
