Two Whimsical Little Fish With Somewhere to Go

One of the great pleasures of Sri Lanka is how constantly the natural world intrudes into the visual one. Along the coast, fish are everywhere — beneath the surface, in markets, hauled ashore in boats, painted on signs, cooked over fires. And then there are those extraordinary tropical waters, capable of producing greens and turquoises that look almost chemically impossible.

The starting point for these earrings was this wonderfully weathered fishing boat, its prow dressed in ceremonial yellow cloth, sitting in water so intensely green it hardly looked real.

In these earrings, I tried to translate that moment rather than reproduce it: small silver fish suspended against irregular, almost molten discs of gold, with tiny topaz quartz crystals catching the watery flashes above ( 6.7cm long).

I particularly love their whimsy. They are elegant from a distance, but then someone looks closer and discovers two tiny fish dangling from your ears. Jewellery should occasionally have a private joke in it.
