Simplicity, With a Bang

Some of the most extraordinary things I saw in Sri Lanka were also the most visually disciplined: a golden Buddha sitting in absolute serenity while an enormous painted cobra rises behind him, its hood exploding into blue, red, white and gold. There is nothing timid about it, yet somehow nothing feels excessive either.

That contradiction stayed with me, and Madagascan labradorite seemed made for it. Labradorite is the ultimate Jekyll-and-Hyde stone: turn it away from the light and it can appear almost smoky grey and unassuming, but catch it at precisely the right angle—as I did in this photograph—and BOOM, it ignites in electric blue, turquoise and molten gold.

In these earrings, I paired that extraordinary flash with long falls of fine silver chain tassels, creating something almost liquid and textile-like as it moves (8.9cm). The design itself is deliberately restrained, allowing the labradorite and all that shimmering silver movement to do the shouting.

Long, fluid, tactile and wonderfully dramatic: simplicity, with a bang.
