The Colours of the Gathering

At Minneriya National Park, we had the rare luxury of time. Hundreds of elephants had gathered around the water and we stayed for hours and watched their lives unfold: feeding, wandering, touching, squabbling and playing. These two little ones were irresistible, their trunks entwined in a game that somehow managed to be wonderfully gentle and complete rough-and-tumble at the same time.

It was also the colours that stayed with me: the luminous young grass, the deeper greens around it, the dusty earth and those magnificent muted charcoal-brown elephant hides.

That became the palette for these earrings. Translucent prehnite from Congo carries those fresh, light-filled greens, while the extraordinary black, bronze and earthy markings of Apache pyrite bring in the darker, dustier tones beneath them. Set into a 22k gold-plated base, these earrings are 7.1 cm long.

I love that something as enormous as an elephant can be so astonishingly tender, and that these earrings carry a little of both: earthiness and lightness, strength and gentleness, allborrowed from one unforgettable afternoon at Minneriya.
