The Squirrel That Became an Earring

Sri Lanka kept introducing me to animals I thought I knew, only to reveal that I knew absolutely nothing about them. This was my first encounter with the Indian giant squirrel, an extraordinary arboreal creature so much larger and more extravagant than the squirrels familiar to us, with an enormous tail that seems almost absurdly long for its body.

But it was the colour that immediately lodged itself in my jewellery brain: that wonderful rosy nose and ears emerging from deep charcoal, cream and warm brown fur. I knew almost immediately that I wanted to translate it.

For these earrings, I used exceptional Argentinian rhodochrositeandtiny quartz crystals whose natural rose, cream and darker markings echo those unexpected pinks beautifully, suspended within overlapping gold-plated circles  that bring in the movement and sweep of this extraordinary animal through the trees.

I love that the inspiration is slightly improbable. Who expects to travel to Sri Lanka, meet an outrageously glamorous squirrel and come home needing to make earrings about it?
