I came across this extraordinary creature like something that had swum straight out of Alice in Wonderland, all electric-blue absurdity and yellow-lipped drama, hovering in its burrow with that impossible combination of elegance and theatrical arrogance that only the reef can produce.

The ribbon eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita), nature’s unapologetic shape-shifter, part serpent, part opera singer, begins life jet-black, transitions into that blazing, high-visibility blue male — colour as strategy, colour as advertisement — and then delivers one of evolution’s most delicious plot twists by becoming a larger, golden female, built not for spectacle but for continuity, fertility, legacy. That entire story insisted on becoming jewellery.

Lapis Lazuli from Afghanistan carries the eel’s saturated royal blues, deep and luminous like living pigment, while smooth pearls drift through the composition like suspended light. The golden sunbursts is to complete the warm golden yellow aspects of this ribbon eel.
