N°042 Statement Earrings - The Living Ocean Colour Collection

For decades I’ve photographed those looping, paired scars in corals, not out of mystery but recognition.

As a reef ecologist, I knew exactly what I was looking at: a monogamous pair of snapping shrimps living just beneath the coral’s skin, running parallel lives with enviable boundaries. Separate tunnels. Shared bedroom. Absolute clarity.

They carve individual corridors through the coral skeleton for ventilation and feeding, but meet in a single central chamber to mate, molt, and negotiate the long game. Monogamous, committed, but never codependent. Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter energy. Frida and Diego with walls intact. The coral grows over them, records their domestic arrangement as pale, deliberate geometry — scars that look less like damage and more like architectural plans.

These earrings are lifted straight from that logic.

Apache gold anchors the composition, a striking natural pairing of deep black magnetite threaded with metallic pyrite, formed under intense hydrothermal conditions and found almost exclusively in one small region of Arizona. It is an uncommon stone, visually dense, carrying that unmistakable contrast between darkness and sudden flashes of gold. The perforated, 22-carat gold-plated discs deliberately echo the coral’s dotted surface and scar patterns, while tiny onyx accents reinforce the chromatic tension.

At 6.8 centimetres, the design remains lean, graphic, and unapologetically architectural — reef logic translated into structure, contrast, and controlled brilliance.
