The inspiration traces back to Lord Howe Island, where delicate cyanobacterial growths rose improbably from the seagrass beds. Photosynthetic oxygen, trapped inside tissue finer than silk, formed tiny buoyant chambers that pushed these fragile structures upright into the water column.
