The muse was the giant clam’s mantle, which never looks like tissue to me but like a painting you might find in a contemporary gallery or in an ancient Aboriginal artwork — deliberate lines, saturated turquoise, radiating greens, deep marine blues layered with intention. Except this is not art imitating the ocean. This is the original.

Those colours are not decorative accidents. They come from microscopic structures within the mantle that manipulate light, producing that impossible turquoise-green voltage that feels both engineered and alive.

At 6.5 centimetres long, these earrings are my translation of that surface. High-grade malachite from the Congo delivers the copper-driven greens and concentric tidal banding that read like moving water held still. The stone carries the depth and the drama. Silver-plated elements sourced from Istanbul and Jaipur keep the architecture clean, while small blue-green crystals reinforce the tonal intensity without competing.

It is not about embellishment. It is about respecting colour that was already doing the heavy lifting long before we tried to frame it.
