Malachite That Refuses Subtlety

Some encounters stay with you because they quietly scramble the boundaries between worlds. This one did exactly that. I was hovering over a solitary tunicate when the colour hit me first — that impossible, saturated green, the kind of green you expect from copper minerals, not living tissue — followed by the pattern, those flowing bands and cellular swirls that felt uncannily geological. It looked like malachite had somehow slipped into biology.

Malachite comes in many different cuts, but this one gives everything away at once. The bullseyes radiate outward, fractured by plumes that fan and feather like veins in a leaf, telling you exactly how copper-rich fluids moved, stalled, then surged again. The pattern is extraordinary — not decorative, but diagnostic — recording shifts in chemistry, oxygen biting in, pressure easing and returning, all laid down over time in a weathered copper belt far from here (Congo).
