Afghan Turquoise and the Metropolis of Colour

Every so often the seabed abandons subtlety altogether. A blazing orange sponge becomes the landscape, while tiny ascidians — turquoise, blue, improbable green — rise from it like a miniature metropolis of colour, a visual collision so cheerful it borders on absurd.

That chromatic architecture demanded movement. The Afghani turquoise tassels, guarded in my drawer for years, finally stepped into their role here, their strands echoing the dotted rhythm of ascidian openings, translating reef geometry into fluidity.

At 9.7 centimetres long, the length is deliberate: it allows the turquoise to breathe, to shift and ripple rather than simply hang. This time the composition leans into heat —  tiny orange carnelians introduce a controlled burn, a warm counterpoint to the cool turquoise. All of it anchored in a richly dotted 16/ 22-carat gold-plated base.

The result feels kinetic, luminous, unapologetically alive — jewellery that doesn’t sit quietly, but radiates presence.
