Lapis Lazuli & Pearl Earrings – A Deep Dive into Marine Color and Texture

Some of the most striking marine creatures have tentacles, like this anemone from Indonesia, with its intense electric blue and green hues, which made it the perfect inspiration for these earrings. At first glance, the anemone looks like something from a sci-fi movie, but it's very real. Its tentacles are tipped with fluorescent blue, while the central mouth region glows an eerie neon green, creating a surreal contrast.

Lapis Lazuli was the ideal gemstone to capture the anemone’s rich blue shades. The deep royal blue of the stones reflects the bioluminescent glow found along the tentacle tips, while the natural gold flecks in the stone echo the shimmer of light over the anemone’s surface.

The green pearls & Peridot at the base mirror the anemone’s vibrant, almost glowing oral disc—the central part of the animal where food is taken in. These pearls have a subtle iridescence, just like the anemone’s shifting tones under different lighting.

The anemone’s tentacles sway with the current, and I wanted to incorporate that movement into the earrings. The three-tiered drop design gives them an organic, flowing quality, allowing them to dangle and catch the light—just like the anemone’s soft, flexible tentacles.

The smooth, rounded shapes of the lapis stones reflect the fluid, undulating nature of an anemone’s body. Unlike rigid coral, anemones continuously shift their form, and I wanted the earrings to have that same sense of fluidity.
