Gold, With the Volume Turned Down

Not all gold needs to shout. At the Dambulla Cave Temple, among its extraordinary accumulation of painted Buddhas, I kept returning to this particular figure: an ancient, muted gold body beneath that magnificent blue cobra, with the robes rendered in rhythmic lines that almost seem woven rather than painted.

It was the restraint of the colours that stayed with me—the way old gold, charcoal and silvered grey can feel infinitely richer for having lost their shine.

In these earrings, I tried to translate that feeling rather than reproduce the statue itself, using wonderfully subdued pyrite with its dark metallic lustre, tiny clear quartz briolettes and intricate 22-carat gold-plated pieces from Istanbul (6.4cm long). (The pyrite is photographed here in full sun; in softer light it retreats to a much moodier gunmetal grey - see second image)

They have presence without brightness for brightness’s sake—gold for someone who likes her jewellery interesting, textured and slightly mysterious.
