A Giant Squirrel, Rewritten in Stone

That extraordinary Indian giant squirrel managed to inspire more than one pair of earrings, because the closer I looked at him, the more colours I found. Beyond that outrageous pink nose were deep charcoal, smoky brown, caramel, cream and almost-black markings, running through his fur and that magnificent sweeping tail.

In these earrings I translated those darker, earthier colours through fossilised ammonites from Morocco, their extraordinary spirals preserved in stone over millions of years. The ammonites carry the same tobacco, caramel, cream and deep brown tones I saw in his fur, while the warm gold-plated settings and softly rose-coloured quartz crystals bring back the flashes of light around her ( 7.0cm long).

There is something wonderfully eccentric about pairing a fleeting wildlife encounter in Sri Lanka with fossils from an ancient Moroccan sea, but that is exactly how my brain works when I design: colour makes connections across completely unrelated worlds.
