Even after more than 30 years of photographing giant clams, this encounter stopped me completely. The exhalant siphon’s tissue unfolded in deep amber, burnt orange, and shadowed darkness, a colour composition so graphic and deliberate it felt less like biology and more like a painting briefly revealed underwater. Some patterns you observe; others interrupt you.

Translating that moment led me to Chohua jasper — a stone whose dramatic blacks are shaped by manganese, while iron carries the warm orange-red tones. Its fractured, almost calligraphic patterning echoed the same visual tension I had seen in the clam’s living surface. Tiny faceted hessonite beads amplify that warmth, while silver button pearls introduce a cooler counterbalance. Set into a silver-plated base from Bali and Seoul, the lines remain clean, allowing colour and structure to lead.

At 6.3 centimetres long, these earrings carry real presence — pieces for those drawn to depth, contrast, and confident visual rhythm.
