The Jackfruit Palette

Sri Lankan markets have a colour language all their own, and jackfruit may be one of their finest inventions: enormous, armoured fruits shifting from sharp green through mustard, ochre and burnt gold, their extraordinary spiked skins creating hundreds of tiny pockets of light and shadow.

That combination of colour and structure became the blueprint for these earrings.

In this pair, I tried to translate the jackfruit palette through Indonesian Maligano Jasper, whose natural abstract markings move through ochre, rust, cream, grey and charcoal. Citrine brings in that rich, ripe golden translucence, while the intricate 22k gold-plated forms surrounding the stones echo something of the fruit’s fabulous spiky architecture. Components from the USA, Jaipur and Seoul complete these 5.2cm shorties.

They’re wonderfully detailed earrings: a little piece of Sri Lankan market exuberance condensed into something elegant enough to wear.
