N°104 Statement Earrings

While exploring a tidal rock pool in Woolgoolga, I was struck by the iridescent beauty of this extraordinary algae. Its undulating, leaf-like structures shimmered with an almost electric blue-green, catching the light in a way that made it look alive beyond its soft, fluid form. The algae's delicate yet defined frilled edges and subtle translucency inspired a jewellery design that captures its movement, structure, and the interplay of colours that shift with the changing angle of light.

These earrings are a direct translation of that natural brilliance into wearable form. The faceted Apatite stones at the top of each earring reflect the deep ocean blues found in the algae’s rippling surface, their multi-dimensional cut ensuring that they catch and refract light in much the same way as the algae’s wet, reflective surface. Hanging below, the hand-formed silver loop is a sculptural representation of the algae’s fluid folds—soft yet structured, with an organic curve that creates both contrast and movement.

Threaded delicately within this silver form are tiny Chrysoprase and Agate beads, chosen for their near-translucent glow and fresh, aquatic greens that mirror the inner hues of the algae. The placement of these beads replicates the way tiny air bubbles cling to the algae's surface, forming a natural rhythm of light and texture. The mix of structured silver, faceted stones, and smooth beads ensures that these earrings, much like their inspiration, are constantly shifting in depth and brilliance depending on their surroundings.
