Crimson Devotion

One of the 2,200 Buddha statues and images inside Sri Lanka’s extraordinary Dambulla cave temple became the blueprint for this pair. What stayed with me was the red — deep, ancient, saturated red wrapped around the figure in great arcs of crimson, rust and black. It had the richness of old pigment and, rather wonderfully, the colour of an excellent red wine.

Back in the studio, I found almost the same depth in this beautifully dark Mookaite from the Pilbara. Its burgundy, oxblood and claret tones seemed to belong to that temple palette immediately. I paired it with very delicate rose-coloured quartz crystals, just enough softness to lift all that intensity, and set the composition into a 22k gold-plated base (6.8cm long).

The result feels rich, ceremonial and just a little decadent.

A Buddha in a cave temple, an Australian stone the colour of serious wine, and a touch of rose quartz to keep everyone civilised.
