Dambulla Red

There are reds, and then there is Dambulla red. Inside the extraordinary cave temples, I found myself staring at Buddhas surrounded by great sweeps of vermilion, rust, blood-red and black — colour that has somehow remained utterly theatrical after centuries. That particular Buddha, framed by its wildly striped red-and-black halo, lodged itself firmly in my jewellery brain.

Back home, I found the geology to match it. Sonora Sunrise is a marvellous copper-rich stone from Mexico in which almost the entire colour story is written by copper: the blazing red is cuprite, a copper oxide; the blue-green flashes are chrysocolla; and the darker areas are commonly tenorite. Even that improbable red comes from copper!

I set the stones into a silver-plated base, then pulled the red upwards with small red quartz crystals, adding hammered silver elements to give all that colour some breathing room (6.8cm long).

The Dambulla temple, translated through copper, quartz and a little geological extravagance.
