N°007 Statement Earrings - The Sri Lanka Collection

Wish Horses

Not every pair in this collection is a literal transcription of something I saw in Sri Lanka. Some wandered in sideways, which seems entirely appropriate in a country where elephants, lions, Ganeshas, demons, flowers and improbable little creatures appear on temples, walls and shrines with complete confidence.

The starting point here was a temple gate almost consumed by tiny saffron-coloured bundles. People knot pieces of cloth around a small offering or donation, attach them to the gate and make a wish. En masse they become this gloriously unruly wall of orange, ochre, rust and turquoise — private hopes turned into public colour.

My little verdigris horses came from Athens, but they had exactly the right degree of mischief to join that world. I paired them with softly luminous moonstone and warm quartz, allowing the orange of the quartz to pick up those hundreds of saffron wishes, while the blue-green patina echoes the painted temple gate. Set into a 22k gold-plated base, they are 7.8cm long.
