N°49 Christmas 2025 Special Earrings

Ten years ago in Tsumago, a mountain village along Japan’s old postal route, I somehow bought chocolate-brown pearls instead of a bear bell. There were bear warnings  and large bells everywhere along the walking trails and smaller bells available in the shops, but I left with pearls — and a the kernel of story in my head.

Fast-forward a decade: I found those same pearls in one of my drawers again, perfectly matched in tone to autumn light and paired them with Hessonite garnets from India and silver bears from Istanbul.
The bears, like the real ones, are symbols of recovery — a reminder that humans and wildlife can, occasionally, share the same path without incident.

These earrings, 6.9 cm long, are a one-off experiment in coexistence: Japan meets Istanbul via geological time and a jewellery bench. Bears, pearls, and balance — nature’s unlikely trilogy.
