Cowrie After Dark

Everyone knows the cowrie shell — smooth, glossy, the souvenir cliché of every beach holiday. But meet the live cowrie on a night snorkel off Lennox Head, and you’ll never see it the same way again. It’s all movement and iridescence, a chocolate-toned creature wrapped in living velvet, part mollusc, part mystery.

That encounter became these 7.7 cm earrings: lava from Indonesia, onyx from Brazil, recycled glass shards from the U.S., all set in a 22 k gold-plated base from Istanbul and Seoul. The design keeps the cowrie’s line-out — but the spirit is pure, nocturnal animal.

Think of them as a geological and biological collaboration — fire, glass, gold, and life. A reminder that what we usually prize is the shell — but the real magic happens when it’s still breathing.
